Determining Your Legacy - What Will You Be Remembered For?
Richard Lieder had this to say about purpose:
"Purpose is the conscious choice of what, where, and how to make a positive contribution to our world. It is the theme, quality, or passion we choose to center our lives around."
What he is saying is that we can make a conscious choice about how we can add value to humanity and center our lives around that choice. Every person has something of value to add to society, whether it is starting a new business venture, teaching and coaching others, being a firefighter, or even assisting the poverty stricken in India.
Each of us can discover and live life on purpose, though the means to discovering purpose varies from person to person. One person may discover their life purpose at a young age, while others may not discover their passions and purpose till later on in life.
How to Find Your Life Purpose:
I'd like to encourage you to begin thinking about what you are passionate about and what brings you joy. Take some time in your life to begin journaling and writing down answers to the following questions: What motivates you? What makes your heart sing? What are your natural talents? What do others tell you that you are good at? What are you driven to do? Is there a cause that you are passionate about? What do you want to be remembered for?
As you begin seeking to discover your passions, you may find a common theme in your writings and your purpose may become clearer. Once you've got an idea of your passions, write out a personal mission statement. For example, if your passion is to educate others about taking care of the environment, your mission statement could be: "My mission in life is to educate others on how they can protect and restore the environment."
Once you've discovered your life purpose, take some time to create an action plan on ways you can live that purpose out. You may need to attend classes, change careers, relocate, volunteer, or make numerous other changes to begin living out your purpose. Taking action is key! Unfortunately, many people may know their passions and purpose in life, but aren't willing to take the necessary steps to live them out.
If you are still having difficulty trying to find your life purpose, one specific exercise you can do is to imagine that it is your funeral day. As you imagine this day, think about what you would like to be remembered for. During the reading of your eulogy, what are some of the things that would be said about you? What accomplishments would you like to have accomplished? How would you have liked to help people? Leaving a legacy is precious, and it is possible for every person.
If you're having a hard time pinpointing your life purpose, don't fret. Life is a journey. Sometimes we go through seasons in life where we feel like we don't have a clearly defined purpose. When in doubt, simply choose to live your daily life walking in love and joy, as that is sure to be part of everyone's life purpose.
Finally, some people think that if they aren't doing something BIG for humanity, then they really aren't doing much. That isn't true though. Each person has something valuable to offer humanity whether big or small. Just like each part of the body comes together to form the whole, each person in the world is valuable and each act of kindness, whether big or small, adds incredible value to humanity.
Live your life on purpose. Begin the journey of discovering your life purpose today and share your passions with others.
