Fashion Rio Spring -Summer 2008/2009

Updated on Dec.2, 2008

Fashion Rio Spring-Summer draws the fashion world's attention to Rio de Janeiro.

Rethink, Recycle, Renew

The theme for the last Fashion Rio - "Rethink, Recycle, Renew" - invited reflections about the need for a change in attitudes, not only in fashion, but in the way people handle the environment in general, according to Fashion Rio coordinator Eloysa Simão.

"We’re living a moment when people need to seek renewal.

Finding feasible, efficient recycling technologies is essential for everyone’s survival," she said.

Diverse Brazil Accents

Rio is, of course, widely represented in the show. But with each passing year, Fashion Rio confirms the growth of fashion hubs in different regions of Brazil as well as the success of sustainable and community-oriented fashion enterprises.

Representatives of Brazil's broad fashion map include Melk Z-Da, from Pernambuco, with a collection inspired in Frances Hodgson Burnett's Secret Garden; Kátia Ferreira, who hails from Brasília with her label Apoena, a socially responsible initiative whose tupi name means "one who sees far"; and Helô Rocha (Têca), whose styles seem to have soaked up the sunshine of her native Rio Grande do Norte.

They present their work alongside other well-known stylists from different Brazilian states, such as Eliza Chanan, from Rio Grande do Sul, Juliana Jabour and Dayse Soares (Drosófila) from Minas Gerais, and Luciana Galeão, from Bahia.
