When traveling by air in Canada, it's important to know the carry-on liquid rules so you can pack and store these materials properly. Security measures are in place to protect people from potential threats such as terrorism, and part of airport security's job is to prevent people from bringing dangerous chemicals, weapons and explosive devices aboard any aircraft. The Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) has established a set of guidelines regarding carry-on liquids to ensure your safety and convenience.

    • According to CATSA, carry-on beverages must be 3.4 oz. or less. These include water bottles, soft drinks, juice, coffee and other beverages. If you have any beverages over 3.4 oz., consume or discard them before passing through the security checkpoint.

    Personal Items

    • According to CATSA, carry-on liquids of a personal nature that are not beverages must also be 3.4 oz.or less. These include shampoo, perfumes, lotions, make-up, deodorants and other such items. If you intend to carry these items on board, they must fit into one clear, resealable, closed plastic bag that is no more than one quart in capacity. A bag this size is approximately 6 by 9 inches or 8 by 7 inches. When you pass through a security checkpoint, remove the plastic bag containing the liquids from your carry-on luggage and place it on the provided tray. Containers of liquid that exceed 3.4 oz.should be placed in your checked luggage.

    • If you are traveling with an infant under two years old, you are allowed to carry certain items in your carry-on luggage, even if their containers exceed the 3.4-oz. limit. These items include baby food, baby formula, juice and milk. Other exceptions include prescription medications and essential non-prescription medications, even if they exceed the 3.4-oz. limit. You must declare these items at the security checkpoint and remove them from your carry-on luggage for screening.
