Gangotri - The mountain range that gave birth to river Ganges

Shrouded in a veil of mythology and strewn with sites of pilgrimage on a backdrop of mountain ranges with vivid scenery and trekking paths, the town of Gangotri appeals to the local and foreign travellers alike with different but equally powerful attractions.

This town most known in India for its pilgrimage sites and the glaciers that gave birth to river Gange is located in the Indian Tibetean border in the northern part of Uttaranchal and 18 km away from main town in this region –Uttarakashi. Located 3,048 metres above sea level, the Gangotri with a scanty population of about 600 has the Jolly Grant as its closest airport while the closest railhead is Rishikesh which is some 200 odd kilometres away and is reachable by cab or bus tours which can be arranged.

Devoted pilgrims travel every year via the trek some 19 km away from Gangotri to witness the birth of the sacred river Gange at the Gomukh at the snout of the glacier in Gangotri which is also claimed to be the second largest in the Himalayan. The town which attracts hoards of pilgrims is yet scantily populated. The temple dedicated to the Goddess Ganga and was constructed under the patronage of Amar Singh Thapa, one Nepalese general in the 18th century is the central attraction of the town.

For the foreign visitor, the region is a cluster of ravishing scenery and amazing treks and walkways. The Nandavan Tappovan leads to the beautiful area of lush green meadows in Tappovan that surround the Shivaling peak. The dodi tal with its glittering lake enclosed by thick forestry and haunted by Himalayan trouts, the Hartil with its batch of seven lakes and the fame of ripe and delicious apples, Gangnani with its sensational scenery and bubbling thermal springs are some of the noteworthy attractions in this region.
